Former police officer Olivier Marchal has crafted an unflinchingly gritty crime drama that oozes depression and barely contained rage at every corner. Marchal does a nice job of balancing out the police investigation story with the main detective’s character development so that it is a perfect blend of the best of both worlds. The shot selection and the pace of the film is fantastic, and the depth of the movie and heartfelt manner in which it is told is excellent. Best of all is the manner in which Marchal portrays the film’s central conflict. Here we have a man whose life is turned to shit, and all around him rules and red tape defy his attempts to make the world a better place and his own life worth something. |
